UN Concerned about Bangladesh Power Transfer UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Falker Turk said the power transfer in Bangla Desh should be a “peaceful one, with full respect to obligations of State under International laws must have a central focus on the human right”. The people who have killed hundreds of innocents and crippled a lakh many of them, should be all punished.
This was said in a statement on Monday by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister following student protests and fled to another country.
Mr. Falker Turk added: `The transition was concluded in a transparent and accountable way that it is inclusive, open to the meaningful participation of all Bangladeshis’. No more violence or revenge,
Democratic processes and the rule of law must be ensured once again,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights added saying “Any emergency measures should only take what is strictly necessary to address an immediate threat. He emphasized the need for the release of every individual who has been arbitrarily detained and called for everyone guilty of human rights violations to be brought to justice. He also said that the root causes and complaints of the crisis should not be ignored.
Falker Türk repeated his demand for a full, independent, and transparent inquiry into all human rights violations in the country since July. Subsequent, initially peaceful protests against a quota system for government jobs have descended into violence with the use of brutal force by authorities.
“Under these conditions, an unbiased inquiry must be conducted here – this is particularly important so that public opinion does not question the investigation,” said Falker Turk. My office is prepared to help with this effort
“Calls for justice and reform cannot be ignored,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said. At this juncture, he said that Bangladesh’s commitment to international human rights can provide a guide for the interim authorities and all political leaders.
Turk said it was “imperative to stop the violence in Bangladesh right now.”
